The Diploma in English (Extension) is a one–year weekend course designed for those employed in the public and private sectors and also for school leavers. The course provides the necessary advanced language skills for those in employment whose professional advancement is obstructed by their lack of competency in English Language & for those who seek employment opportunities. The course has been designed on par with Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework.

Objectives and Benifits

• To make available opportunities to those who aspire to learn English.
• To improve the participants’ productive ability, self-confidence and clarity in the use of English.
• To help the participants to lay a strong foundation to pursue advanced English Courses leading to Higher Diplomas and Degrees.
• To help participants to prepare themselves for internationally recognized English tests such as IELTS, TOEFL and FCE (Cambridge).
• To provide an opportunity for the participants to obtain Diploma Level University English qualifications for various purposes.

Entry Requirements

A. An  Advanced Certificate in English from a recognized university
OR
B. A candidate should have passed General Certificate of Education  (Advanced Level) Examination, or an equivalent qualification or a course equivalent to SLQF Level 2 (Sri Lanka Qualifications  Framework)
OR
C. A Course equivalent to NVQ Level 4 (National Vocational Qualification )
AND

a. A credit pass for English at GCE (O/L)
OR
b. Basic or Professional English Certificate from a recognized university
OR
c. A pass at the National Certificate in English (NCE)
OR
d. A pass for General English at the GCE (A/L)
OR
e. A pass at the compulsory English examination conducted by a University as a partial requirement for the award of a degree.
OR
f. A degree in English medium from a recognized university.
OR
g. Any other qualification, the Board of Studies may, on case by case evaluation, consider suitable, and acceptable to the Senate.

Admission Procedure

Application for registration for the Diploma in English (Extension) programme shall be invited by notice in the newspapers.

(a) A person who wishes to become a candidate for the Diploma in English (Extension) shall make an application to the Registrar when the said programme is advertised.

(b) The Application shall be on the prescribed form providing the information as s/he may be required to submit, including his/her qualifications for undertaking the course of study.

In addition to the required qualifications, the candidates under Section B should pass the written Selection Examination and the Oral Test conducted by the English Language Teaching Unit of the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka.
