Opening Dr. Siran Deraniyagala Research and Teaching Museum

The Department of Archaeology and Heritage Management opened its research and teaching museum on 7th September 2020, named in honour of Dr. Siran Deraniyagala, former Director-General of the Department of Archaeology, Sri Lanka and opened by Prof. Senarath Dissanayake, Director General of the Department of Archaeology. The exhibition collection contains the artefeacts recovered from the research excavations conducted by the Department, a loan collection from the Department of Archaeology and fossils collected from Australia which spanning from the Ordovician period (450 million years ago) to the artefacts from the prehistoric, protohistoric and historical period of Sri Lanka. Specifically, it contains the oldest known Brahmic scripts and steel artefact in Sri Lanka. The Museum is open for the general public with prior notification for the HoD and will be used for the students’ teaching and research purposes in the Department.
